Copywriting & why simplicity is a superpower

To go from being a good freelance copywriter to being a great freelance copywriter, you need to learn the art of simplicity.

You can be the smartest freelance copywriter out there, but if you can’t simplify your idea or your message, you’ll leave your audience confused and cold. That’s because copywriting is not about the copywriter. It’s about the audience - their needs, their desires and their urgency.

It’s about leaving your ego at the door and realising the fanciest way to say something, often isn’t the most functional way to say something. And most of the time, direct communication without distraction or fluff works best.

If you have a simple message, saying it in the most direct way, with features and benefits on the table is how you get people engaged. If your product or service is truly irresistible to your audience, it actually doesn’t need a hard sell. It just needs to shine, with clarity and confidence.

Clarity and confidence go a long way when you’re a freelance copywriter. In all of the 19 years that I’ve written copy, I can’t think of a single client that hasn’t needed these two things. Dressing up copy for the sake of it just makes your reader bored and dilutes your message. It’s better to get to the point fast, then pepper your offer with authentic story-telling.

As a freelance copywriter, it’s my job to connect, engage and sell, not to impress people with fancy words. In a saturated digital space, simplicity is the superpower that reduces mental effort, builds trust and leads to higher conversions.

If you’re looking for a freelance copywriter who can write precisely and concisely, let’s talk.
