Copywriters vs content writers, what’s the difference?

Every freelance copywriter knows that there are two types of copywriters - conceptual copywriters and content writers. And understanding the difference between the two is key to finding the right copywriter for your project. Let’s break down the key differences…

A content writer is a freelance writer who typically takes on long form copywriting projects - informative articles, blogs and white papers. They might have a degree in literature and be a self-proclaimed ‘word nerd’.

A copywriter is a freelance writer who comes up with ideas and can create any form of communcation wrapped around that idea - a radio script, a billboard, an in-store promo, a brochure, website copy or customer emails. They write about products and services, and can cover any B2B or B2C subject matter. They might have a degree in the arts and see the project’s bigger picture, both verbally and visually.

I fall into the second camp (although don’t ask me to pitch a tent).

I’m a conceptual freelance copywriter with a degree in Graphic Design & Media. That means I come up with campaign ideas and visual narratives, but also write all of the copywriting to align with it. My background in design means I have both the skills and the vision to join the dots between engaging brand identities, both graphically and linguistically.

Being a freelance copywriter with conceptual skills means that I don’t just see your project as words on a page, or a brochure, or a billboard. I consider the entire theme, user experience and persuasive psychology behind it. The words I choose aren’t there to look pretty or sound fancy, they’re there to drive a message home, tie in with ‘the big idea’ and deliver unforgettable impact.

A content writer sets the stage and waits patiently for results. A copywriter goes out there, grabs attention and creates an immediate value hook, hammering home the message for conversion right away.
