How values shape all great copywriting

24 years ago I made a decision that would shape my freelance copywriting business before I even had one.

I got to know my values.

I was sat at a family dinner and decided I wanted to be vegetarian. Back then, the only plant-based options were jacket potatoes. So I ate a lot of potatoes and waited for the world to catch up.

This decision came from the heart.

It wasn't inspired by an influencer, it wasn't trending, and it made it pretty hard for my mum doing the weekly shop!

But even as a teenager, I felt a huge sense of empathy for animals and knew that supporting the meat industry was not a path I wanted to follow in life.

That moment in my early years taught me a lot, because knowing what you stand for changes everything.

It changes the decisions you make, the people you work with and the work you put your name to. It shines a light on the clients you sign with and the ones you walk away from.

If you know me, you'll know I value respect, trust and clarity above everything. Yet when I started freelancing 15 years ago, I didn't have a mission statement or a set of values to work from.

I just slowly started asking myself what I believe in. And my business and reputation as a freelance copywriter grew from those answers.
