500 post-it notes, 1 big idea. How trusting the process translates to great copywriting

I’ll be honest, I used to think ‘trust the process’ was just another trendy phrase that people print on mugs and candles. That’s until I started doing it myself and realised that it’s a formula for results and getting something right rather than just getting something done.

Trusting the process isn’t just some soft woo-woo reserved for yoga classes and self-help guides. It’s a practical, strategic part of doing something well. And copywriting is no exception.

When you hire a freelance copywriter, both the client and the copywriter need to be on the same page, trusting the process. As a freelance copywriter, I always set out my approach before the brief even lands. I’m transparent and talk through each stage of the work, explaining what needs to be done and why.

This builds trust and demonstrates to my client that I know what I’m doing. It also underlines that I’m going to be up-front about everything along the way, something that I personally believe to be one of the markers of an authentic business.

Every freelance copywriting job is different, but most follow a set path.

Here’s how it usually plays out:

- Briefing call
- Time to ask questions and fully understand the client’s ambitions
- Quote for the work
- Agree on costings and timeframes for delivery
- Absorb existing comms and research industry, target market and competitors
- Deliver a first draft
- Wait for client feedback
- Refine the copy in line with the feedback

Trusting the process isn’t always easy. It requires deep understanding, patience and the ability to resolve challenges, together. This is why hiring an established freelance copywriter is a smart move. I’ve worked on over 500 copywriting jobs, meaning I’ve worked with over 500 clients. That’s a lot of time refining the process I mentioned above, and even more time observing how to handle a range of different personalities and industries.

When you trust a copywriter’s process, you end up with copy that’s sharp, on-brand and on-brief, speaking to the right people in the right tone at the right time. It’s never rushed, but always trusted into existence. And it got there, one honest draft at a time.

If you’re looking for a smart, strategic freelance copywriter to walk you through that process and write copy about your products and services that hits the spot, get in touch today. I’d love to hear from you.
